Free Screenwriting Lecture

“The Visual Mindscape of the Screenplay

I just recently completed a lecture tour that included the University of Victoria, Vancouver Film School, Praxis at Simon Fraser University, University of San Francisco, University of California, Davis and the Hollywood Film School in Los Angeles.

A fully realized screenplay reveals itself primarily through images, making full use of what I call the “Visual Mindscape”. This allows the reader or viewer to ‘discover’ elements of the story rather than being told. By being able to actively participate in the unfolding of the story makes the over all experience for the reader a more visceral and luminous experience.

The lectures are sponsored by PAVED Arts, The Saskatchewan Filmpool Cooperative, The Saskatchewan Writers Guild, SMPIA and the Refinery.

Saskatoon at:

The Refinery
609 Dufferin Ave

Monday June 4 at 7:00pm

Regina at:

The Saskatchewan Filmpool Cooperative, 310- 1822 Scarth St.

Monday June 18 at 7:00 pm

With examples from various well known screenplays and clips from such films as; The Queen, Children of Men, The Godfather, Cabaret, Quills, Planet of the Apes, Citizen Kane and Mulholland Drive, the lecture explores the various forms of the visual mindscape such as; withholding, discovery, the law of contradiction, location and circumstance as metaphor as well as seeking visual expressions for time, tense and flow of location.

The course is a comprehensive overview of the screenwriting process. It covers proper script formatting, terminology, effective use of scene cards, proper scene construction, script tone, creating dramatic action and reaction through properly paced narrative and how to create vivid characters and effective dialogue with special emphasis on the antagonist.

Working with the shooting scripts of several award winning screenplays as well as Joseph Campbell’s “12 Stages of the Hero’s Journey” the course will also explore both story and script structure.

It will also deal with the concept of the ‘Visual Mindscape’. This is a style of screenwriting that seeks out metaphoric images that advance the story line, enhance the environment of the scene and offer an external visual representation of the character’s inner journey.
